WDS with Belkin G Router and TP-Link Wireless Lite N Access Point

WDS, stands form Wireless Distributed System, is a way to extend / expand wireless network coverage. Not every wireless router / access point has this feature.
read : WDS in wikipedia

Objective : expand wireless network coverage served by Belkin G Router. Belkin G Router, will act as Root AP, doesn't have WDS feature.

TP-Link Wireless Router as Remote AP: Failed
I bought a TP-Link Wireless Router 54Mbps, with WDS feature built in, to be used as a Remote AP. After many attempts, I failed to connect Remote AP to Root AP.
Following things has been set :

  • Root and Remote AP use same Channel : 6
  • Bridge Mode in TP-Link Wireless Router. MAC address of Root Router (Belkin) had already filled in Bridge Mode text box.
  • Wireless Security has been matched : WEP 64 bit with password
  • Use same subnet IPs : 192.168.2.1 for Root AP and 192.168.2.100 for Remote AP.
  • Reserve IP Range : 192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.90 for Root AP, and the rest for Remote AP (91-254).
  • Reboot both IP.
TP-Link TL-WA701ND as Remote AP: Success

Then I used  TP-Link Wireless Lite N Access Point TL-WA701ND, no router. This model has 4 network options :

  • Access Point, act as access point only
  • Multi SSID, can support up to 4 SSID.
  • Client, will act as a wireless station to enabled wired host(s) to access AP.
  • Repeater, to expand wireless coverage from device with WDS built in support.
  • Repeater Universal, to expand wireless coverage from device with no WDS built in support.
  • Bridge, to connect 2 or wired LAN. Can operate up to 4 AP.

I used Repeater Universal mode to expand my Belkin Wireless Router. IP 192.168.2.254 is assigned to this device.
In Remote AP :
  • Network >> gateway : 192.168.2.1
  • DHCP >> gateway : 192.168.2.254
  • DHCP >> DNS : 192.168.2.1
After reboot, in my Windows available wireless connection list there is only 1 network : Belkin G Router SSID. Connect, and it works ! Four bars of signal strength shown (windows XP).

Windows try to connect to Root AP whenever possible.
Before I expand my wireless network coverage, my laptop has already been able to connect to Belkin Router. However the signal is very weak. 'No Signal' message is often displayed and could not connect to the Internet. Maximum signal strength is 1 bar (windows XP).
After using WDS support from TP-Link AP, my signal strength (windows XP) swapped very often, in 1 - 6 minutes interval. One minute it has 4 bar signal strength and the other time has 1 bar signal strength.
I assumed that Windows wireless connection manager is trying to connect directly to Root AP whenever Root AP's signal strength is strong enough.
